Siemens Gamesa has unveiled its new 14MW SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine, the largest capacity wind turbine in the world.
The turbine, which beats out competitor GE Renewable Energy’s 12MW Haliade X turbine, features 108-metre-long blades, on a 222-meter diameter rotor, and capacity can be boosted to 15MW using proprietary technology.
One turbine produces enough electricity to power approximately 18,000 average European households every year, according to the company, meaning that 30 turbines would be able to cover the annual electricity consumption of the city closest to its international headquarters in Bilbao, Spain.
