Electricity generation by the hydel power stations owned and operated by Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) surpassed 8,500 megawatts for the first time in Pakistan as Wapda provided 8,757MW to the national grid during peak hours. Previously, the record of hydel power generation was 8,474MW, which was delivered to the system on September 11 last year. Electricity generation was the result of higher reservoir levels at Tarbela and Mangla dams, increased water outflow as per the indent set by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) and effective operation of Wapda’s hydel power stations. Statistics show that the Tarbela Hydel Power Station generated 3,331MW, Tarbela 4th Extension 1,410MW, Ghazi Barotha 1,450MW, Mangla Hydel Power Station 915MW and Neelum-Jhelum 870MW. Other hydel power stations cumulatively contributed 781MW to the national grid.
