Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) and Pakistan LNG Terminal Limited’s (PLTL) report on supply chain standards reflect an overstressed system that has been working beyond its capacity. With the focus now primarily being on shoring up the terminals, all relevant authorities are scrambling to create a new strategy that will provide some relief. In its own regard, this is something that had to be done. However, the sooner we make the shift towards more sustainable sources of energy, the better—for the long-term at least.
The report further elaborated on how Pakistan’s LNG supply chain faces severe operational and safety risks, forcing them to expand to the use of Terminal-2 which promises a 71 percent utilisation rate. This is sure to reduce the burden off Terminal-1, which has been functioning in overdrive recently. Perhaps the next course of action could be the construction of more terminals that further aid the smooth transportation of LNG and promises a consistent supply. The presence of such infrastructure will also allow for the country to diversify its supply and expand its overall storage capacity. Such a holistic medium-term fix is necessary considering the fragile condition of the supply chain in the status quo.
Once the immediate repercussions are dealt with, the authorities must work towards abandoning the use of fossil fuels as a whole. As the years pass, not only do the reserves of such energy sources keep depleting, almost nearing extinction, but the rate of pollution caused by their use has steadily increased.
Sustainability is the trend for the future, as well as the key for survival, and it is something we need to get behind now. Only if we start procuring the technology needed to harvest green energy will we be able to ensure the country can completely run on green energy in the years to come. The time is now to invest into our future.
