KP Urges Centre to Clear Rs5.48 Billion Electricity Arrears

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has formally requested the federal government to settle outstanding electricity arrears totaling Rs5,476 million owed to Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (Pedo).

In a letter to Federal Minister for Energy and Power Division Awais Leghari, KP’s Adviser to Chief Minister on Finance, Muzzammil Aslam, emphasized the urgency of paying these arrears to fulfill obligations to KP’s residents.

The arrears include Rs2,114 million for electricity from Malakand III Hydro Power Complex (HPC) and Rs149 million from Daral Khwar, confirmed by relevant authorities. Additionally, unconfirmed arrears of about Rs3,213 million include Rs1,552 million for power from Malakand III, with indexation pending from October 2019 to September 2020.

Moreover, Pedo’s exports to the national grid and payments from Pesco are also pending, totaling Rs1,232 million for Pehur Hydro Power Station (HPS) and Rs196 million from other sources.

Aslam highlighted KP’s contribution to the national grid and stressed the importance of timely payments for sustaining operations and meeting obligations. He urged immediate action from the federal government to ensure sequential payment processing for electricity sold by KP, ensuring financial stability and uninterrupted essential services for citizens.
