WAPDA Chairman Visits Diamer-Bhasha Dam Site

GILGIT: WAPDA Chairman, retired Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani, visited the Diamer-Bhasha Dam site on Friday to review the ongoing construction activities and assess the progress of the work.

During the visit, Mr. Ghani was informed that work is actively underway at 14 key sites of the project, which is located across the Indus River, 40 km downstream of Chilas town in Gilgit-Baltistan. He inspected various components including the diversion canal, guide wall, diversion tunnel, upstream and downstream coffer dams, permanent bridge, and the left and right abutments of the main dam.

The CEO of Diamer Basha Dam Company, project director, consultants, and contractors briefed the chairman about the construction progress. Notably, the diversion system has been completed and is functioning well, and the permanent access bridge is also finished. Adjacent approach roads are expected to be completed by next month.

Mr. Ghani emphasized the importance of adhering to construction standards to ensure high-quality work.

Additionally, he participated in a jirga with Gilgit-Baltistan ministers and civil administration officials to discuss the resettlement of affected people. He highlighted that WAPDA has allocated Rs. 78.5 billion for resettlement and development schemes, including projects in the health, education, and infrastructure sectors in the region.
