ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved K-Electric’s seven-year Power Acquisition Plan (PAP 2024-30), allowing the utility to increase its generation capacity by approximately 3,200MW, primarily through renewable energy sources.

The plan includes a significant expansion of power received from the national grid, expected to nearly double from 1,100MW to 2,050MW, resulting in a projected 9% reduction in tariffs from 8.7 cents to 7.9 cents per kWh by 2030.

The PAP envisions 1,200MW from renewables, 82MW from hydro, and 990MW from thermal sources. K-Electric will also benefit from the Karachi Nuclear interconnection (KKI).

K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi highlighted the plan’s focus on integrating 1,282MW of renewable energy, including a 270MW solar PV project in Karachi and a 200MW hybrid plant near the Dhabeji Grid Station, contributing to sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint.

NEPRA emphasized that tariff figures in the PAP are provisional, subject to regulatory approval through competitive auctions or negotiated terms. The regulator has also extended power purchase agreements with Tapal and Gul Ahmed, but did not extend the retirement dates for units of Bin Qasim Power Station.

K-Electric’s PAP outlines a roadmap for meeting long-term electricity needs, prioritizing clean energy integration to ensure a sustainable and affordable energy ecosystem.
