The power tariff in Pakistan is expected to increase by Rs3.41 per unit due to the monthly fuel adjustment (MFA), according to media reports. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to review an application from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requesting this hike.
The CPPA has attributed the proposed increase to the higher costs incurred during the monthly fuel adjustment for May. According to their report, 12.26 billion units of electricity were generated last month, with a production cost of Rs9.12 per unit. If approved, this tariff hike will add to the financial burden on consumers already facing high electricity prices.
This potential increase follows a series of recent hikes. Earlier in the financial year, the basic electricity tariff was raised from Rs7.50 per unit in the previous fiscal year to Rs7.91 per unit. The new tariff surge is anticipated to take effect from July 1.
