LAHORE: In response to rising electricity costs, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the provision of solar panels to households consuming between 50 and 500 units of electricity monthly. Chairing a meeting with the Energy Department, she greenlighted the ‘Roshan Gharana Programme,’ which aims to alleviate the burden of high electricity costs.
Under this initiative, the Punjab government will cover 90% of the cost of solar panels, with consumers paying the remaining 10%. Beneficiaries will repay the government’s share in easy installments over five years. “The government is committed to supporting people through difficult times,” said CM Maryam, expressing hope that this program will mitigate current energy challenges.
A cabinet meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday to formally approve the Roshan Gharana Programme. Initially, the poorest families will receive the solar systems through a transparent selection process. The program will consider seasonal variations, with reduced installments during winter months. The solar panels will be supplied exclusively by the government to ensure quality and reliability.
CM Maryam also chaired a provincial apex committee meeting on Monday, attended by senior officials, including the Corps Commander Lahore, Chief Secretary Punjab, IG Police, and intelligence officers. The committee reviewed the province’s security situation, with a focus on public safety and national security as per the revised National Action Plan.
The forum discussed comprehensive security measures for foreign nationals, including Chinese workers on CPEC and non-CPEC projects. A detailed security plan for Muharram processions was also reviewed, highlighting the use of high-tech monitoring and multi-tiered security deployment.
Additionally, the committee examined flood monitoring mechanisms and proposed short- and long-term measures to protect people and livestock during the monsoon season. Rescue and relief plans were also discussed to ensure preparedness for potential flooding.
In a separate message, CM Maryam Nawaz extended her greetings to all Pakistanis on the start of the new Islamic year. She emphasized the importance of learning from the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and called for a commitment to compassion, justice, unity, and tolerance. Reflecting on the significance of Muharram and the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA), she prayed for the freedom of oppressed Muslims in Palestine and Kashmir and urged the Muslim community to embrace the spirit of brotherhood and ease each other’s burdens in the new Islamic year.
