The federal government has constituted a four-member committee to devise a strategy for the conversion of three power plants in the country set up under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor regime from imported coal to indigenously extracted Thar coal.
The notification announcing the constitution of the committee for conversion of the three independent power producers from imported coal to Thar coal has been issued by the Power Division of the federal government on the directives of Federal Energy Minister, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari. The committee in question will be headed by Additional Secretary-1 of the Power Division. The committee will consult all the relevant stakeholders to present its findings concerning the technical and financial aspects of the conversion process of the three power plants. The committee will also review the logistical facilities available to transport coal from Thar coalfields to the sites of power plants in question.
The committee will conduct research studies to send proposals and an implementation strategy to the federal government to convert these power plants from imported coal to the abundantly available indigenous energy resource. The committee will also comprise the Director-General (Thermal), the Private Power Infrastructure Board, as member, Shamsuddin Sheikh, former chief of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company, and Shahab Qadir, K-Electric, as the two members from the private sector.
