While many—including Israel’s allies and residents of Gaza—hope that Sinwar’s death could mark a turning point toward ending the war, both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas have reaffirmed their commitment to continued fighting until their objectives are met. Netanyahu has vowed to eliminate Hamas and rescue the hostages held by the group, while Hamas has stated that captives will only be freed if a ceasefire is established, Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza, and Palestinian prisoners are released.
The conflict, which began with Hamas-led militants breaching Israel’s security fence on 7 October 2023—resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and the abduction of 250 others—has led to extensive loss of life and devastation. Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza has killed over 42,000 Palestinians, as reported by local health authorities, who make no distinction between combatants and civilians.
