KARACHI: K-Electric (KE) has earned two distinguished honors at the 2024 Asian Power Awards, underscoring its role as a leader in energy efficiency and innovation. The company’s 560MW Bin Qasim Power Station II (BQPS-II) was awarded both the Gas Power Project of the Year – Pakistan and the Power Plant Upgrade of the Year – Pakistan, recognizing its advanced upgrades in energy efficiency, according to a statement released Thursday.
KE’s substantial investment in BQPS-II, part of a larger $4 billion modernization strategy post-privatization, has significantly boosted the plant’s operational adaptability and reliability. Key infrastructure enhancements have enabled the facility to utilize regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) as an alternative fuel, while reducing auxiliary load requirements. These improvements have increased the plant’s net efficiency, positioning it to meet Karachi’s rising energy needs.
The Asian Power Awards are among the industry’s most respected accolades, celebrating entities that drive transformative change and address sustainability challenges in energy production. KE’s achievements have placed it alongside prominent global players like Dubai Electric and Water Authority (DEWA) and China Resources Power, emphasizing its role as a forward-looking energy provider in Pakistan.
KE’s modernization efforts extend beyond BQPS-II. With recent approval from NEPRA for its generation tariff petition, KE’s $2 billion investment plan through 2030 is now set in motion, without impacting consumer rates. The utility has also launched a renewable energy initiative, finalizing a competitive bidding process for 640MW of wind and solar projects in Balochistan and Sindh, resulting in record-low renewable energy tariffs in Pakistan. These efforts are part of KE’s Power Acquisition Program (PAP), which aims to incorporate 1,300MW of renewable energy into its grid.
Chief Generation & Transmission Officer Abbas Husain stated, “Being recognized alongside some of the world’s top power innovators highlights our commitment to enhancing generation efficiency, reducing costs, and ensuring a dependable electricity supply for our customers.”
