Russia Warns New US Energy Sanctions Will Destabilize Global Markets

New-Russia

MOSCOW: The Kremlin has criticized the latest US sanctions targeting the Russian energy sector, warning of potential destabilization of global oil markets. Moscow vowed to take measures to mitigate the impact of the sanctions, which were announced on Friday.

“These actions by the United States are an attempt to undermine our companies through non-competitive means, but we are confident in our ability to counteract them,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated.

Peskov cautioned that such sanctions would inevitably disrupt international energy and oil markets. “We will closely monitor the repercussions and adjust the operations of our companies to minimize the effects of these illegal measures,” he added.

The sanctions, imposed by the US Treasury, target major Russian oil producers Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, along with 183 vessels involved in transporting Russian oil. The move aims to slash Russia’s oil revenues, which are allegedly used to fund its military operations in Ukraine.

A US official estimated the sanctions could cost Russia billions of dollars per month if strictly enforced. The measures have already pressured Chinese and Indian refiners, key buyers of Russian crude, to explore alternative suppliers.

Peskov dismissed the notion that energy supply chains could be permanently disrupted. “Modern experience shows that if one route is blocked, alternative solutions emerge elsewhere,” he said, emphasizing Russia’s efforts to adapt and maintain energy flows despite sanctions.

The situation underscores growing tensions in global energy markets and raises concerns over supply stability amid geopolitical disputes.
