ISLAMABAD: Amid ongoing natural gas shortages, the federal government informed the Senate of plans to open bidding on 30 newly identified offshore assets within six months. These measures aim to address the worsening gas crisis.
Speaking at the session on Monday, Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik revealed findings from recent research indicating significant potential gas resources within Pakistan’s maritime boundaries. “In just two months, 25 to 30 offshore assets have been identified, with bidding scheduled in six months. Additionally, new onshore assets will be opened for bidding within three to four months,” Malik stated.
The discussion stemmed from a motion by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza, highlighting the severe gas pressure issues in Balochistan, particularly Quetta. Apologizing for the inconvenience caused by gas shortages, Malik acknowledged the country’s low gas discovery rates and assured the house of efforts to address the crisis.
He also noted that no new gas connections had been issued over the last four years due to a ban imposed by the previous government under Imran Khan. “This decision was likely taken in light of the gas crisis and remains in place to prioritize pending connections,” Malik explained.
Parliamentary Salaries Bill Passed
The Senate also approved the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill 2025, moved by treasury Senator Danesh Kumar of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). Law Minister Azam Tarar endorsed the bill, which empowers the Senate House Finance Committee to determine members’ salaries and allowances, aligning with a similar measure passed by the National Assembly.
Tarar emphasized that the bill would reinforce Parliament’s role in handling financial matters related to its members. Several new bills were also introduced and referred to relevant standing committees.
The session, chaired by Deputy Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan, was later adjourned until Tuesday after quorum issues were raised by PTI Senator Mohsin Aziz.
