April 5, 2025 – Lahore: Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, visited WAPDA House and assured full support from the Ministry for the timely completion of crucial water and hydropower projects.
In his address to senior officers and staff, the Minister highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding water storage capacity and enhancing clean, green, and affordable hydel power generation. Emphasizing the strategic importance of ongoing projects, he noted that several key initiatives in the water and energy sectors are being pursued with urgency to meet national needs.
The Minister commended WAPDA for effectively managing its development portfolio and expressed confidence in the authority’s ability to deliver projects as scheduled. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s resolve to assist WAPDA in achieving water, food, and energy security for Pakistan.
Since its inception in 1958, WAPDA has remained central to the country’s development. It is currently executing eight mega projects, including Diamer Basha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project, Tarbela 5th Extension, Kurram Tangi Dam (Stage 1), Nai Gaj Dam, Kachhi Canal Extension, and the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K-IV). Scheduled for phased completion between 2026 and 2030, these projects will double WAPDA’s hydel capacity from 9,500 MW to 19,500 MW and increase gross water storage by 9.7 MAF.
These developments will irrigate an additional 3.9 million acres, supply 950 million gallons of drinking water daily to Karachi and Peshawar, and generate 35,000 employment opportunities across Pakistan
