ISLAMABAD: Power Division spokesperson Zafaryab Khan on Sunday reaffirmed that the electricity relief package announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is fully in effect, dismissing circulating reports denying its implementation as “false and misleading.”
Speaking to a private news channel, Khan stated that claims of no change in electricity tariffs were baseless and aimed at creating public confusion. “Certain elements are deliberately spreading misinformation, distorting facts, and misrepresenting the government’s official stance,” he said.
He clarified that the tariff cut—announced by the Prime Minister to ease the financial burden on consumers during the peak summer season—remains valid and is already being reflected in electricity bills.
Khan highlighted that following the PM’s directive, NEPRA held a public hearing on April 4 to expedite implementation. Power Division and NEPRA officials presented data during the session showcasing the government’s sustained efforts behind the initiative.
He confirmed that the relief package, already approved by the federal cabinet, applies to all power distribution companies nationwide. Consumers are now benefiting from an average per-unit reduction of Rs7.41 to Rs7.69 in their bills.
The spokesperson credited months of negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) as instrumental in securing this relief. “The real impact is reaching the people, and unnecessary debates over tariff categories only distract from this success,” he concluded.
