Southern Punjab, including Multan, is experiencing an alarming rise in temperatures with the mercury hitting 43°C, according to the Meteorological Department. Health officials report a significant increase in gastroenteritis cases at Nishtar Hospital, where 120 patients sought treatment within the past 24 hours.
“Most patients received initial medical aid and were discharged,” said a spokesperson for Nishtar Hospital. In response to the growing health crisis, authorities have designated a separate ward specifically for gastroenteritis patients at Nishtar Hospital.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that the current heat wave could lead to heat stroke cases across the region. Medical experts are advising residents to take precautionary measures as reports of gastroenteritis continue to emerge from various hospitals throughout the city.
Dr. Javed Akram, a medical expert consulted on the issue, emphasized the importance of understanding heat stroke symptoms and prevention methods. “When venturing outdoors during daytime, always carry water and consume it regularly,” he advised. “Cover your head properly and use umbrellas when exposed to direct sunlight.”
Health professionals recommend that citizens drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
The continuous rise in temperature has raised concerns among health authorities about a potential increase in heat stroke cases alongside the ongoing gastroenteritis outbreak. Hospitals across the region remain on high alert as the heatwave is expected to continue in the coming days.
