KARACHI – Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced on Sunday that a significant agreement has been reached between the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and K-Electric regarding the collection of Municipal Utility Charges and Taxes (MUCT).
In accordance with a court decision, a resolution supporting the collection of these charges through K-Electric has been approved by the City Council. Mayor Wahab stated that a committee formed for this purpose conducted regular meetings, leading to the council’s approval based on the committee’s recommendations.
The agreement ensures maximum relief for low-income individuals. Consumers using up to 100 units of electricity will be exempt from the tax. Charges will be applied incrementally for higher usage brackets: 20 rupees for 101-200 units, 40 rupees for 201-300 units, and up to 300 rupees for over 700 units. Commercial and industrial consumers will face a flat charge of 400 rupees across all categories.
Mayor Wahab highlighted that this initiative will generate an annual revenue of four billion rupees for KMC, which will be transparently allocated for the city’s welfare and development. He assured citizens that this tax is considerably lower than what was collected during former City Nazim Mustafa Kamal’s tenure and that all funds would be responsibly managed.
Emphasizing transparency, Wahab reassured that each penny collected would be accounted for and used to meet the city’s needs and citizens’ expectations. He urged opponents of the tax to consider the long-term benefits for Karachi’s development and well-being.
