ISLAMABAD: In response to the ongoing inefficiencies and mismanagement at the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), the federal government has decided to divide the entity into two distinct companies: National Grid Company Projects (Projects) and National Grid Company Assets (NGC Assets), sources revealed.
NTDC, which has faced repeated criticism for outdated processes, corruption allegations, and delays in project execution, was originally formed in 1998 following the unbundling of WAPDA. The company is responsible for constructing and maintaining Pakistan’s transmission network, including 220KV and 500KV grid stations, and has expanded into advanced technologies like 765KV and ±600KV HVDC.
Despite its role, NTDC has struggled with delays, inefficient project management, and accusations of favoritism. Projects scheduled for 2-3 years have often extended to 7-8 years, leading to financial losses. The company’s monopoly is also being eroded as provinces establish their own transmission companies.
A committee led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was tasked with restructuring NTDC, proposing the creation of National Grid Company (Projects) for project development and procurement, and limiting the existing NTDC to managing transmission services and assets as National Grid Company (Assets). The restructuring will increase oversight and efficiency, with full implementation expected by the end of 2024.
The Power Division will soon present the restructuring plan to the Federal Cabinet for approval.
