ISLAMABAD: In a move contrary to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives, the Northern Power Generation Company Limited (NPGCL) Board has reinstated Sabeeh Uz Zaman Faruqui as CEO to leverage his expertise amid operational challenges.
On December 20, 2024, the Prime Minister had suspended the CEOs of three Generation Companies (GENCOs), including Faruqui (GENCO-III), for hindering the disposal of dead assets and delaying human resource restructuring. Despite this, the NPGCL Board, following a formal inquiry, exonerated and reinstated Faruqui on January 3, 2025.
Chairman of the NPGCL Board, Tabrez Aslam Shami, cited critical challenges necessitating a full-time CEO, including:
Coordination with NESPAK: Ensuring precise evaluations for plant disposals.
Management of HEPSEC Disputes: Resolving disputes to safeguard NPGCL’s interests.
Security Policies: Developing robust plans for asset protection post-plant closures.
Residential Colonies: Addressing legal and operational requirements for properties in Muzaffargarh and Multan.
Operational Continuity: Maintaining plant substations to ensure supply chain reliability.
Investment Management: Overseeing strategic investments amid transitions.
The Board emphasized that Faruqui’s reinstatement is pivotal during this transitional phase, highlighting his experience and familiarity with ongoing processes. His leadership is deemed essential to address complex issues and ensure NPGCL fulfills its responsibilities effectively.
