Islamabad – Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has invited France’s Green Fund to support Pakistan’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), focusing on small vehicles. The proposal was made during a meeting with French Ambassador to Pakistan Nicolas Galey in Islamabad.

The Minister highlighted Pakistan’s recently introduced Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, which aims to deliver annual fuel savings worth billions of dollars while promoting environmental sustainability. He noted that the transition would also reduce transportation costs, easing the financial burden on the public.

Ambassador Galey commended Pakistan’s successful negotiations and the amicable review of agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The Minister emphasized that ongoing negotiations with 28 IPPs are projected to yield national savings of Rs. 1.4 trillion.

Leghari also announced plans to introduce a Wheeling Policy for electricity transmission and distribution, facilitating efficient use of surplus power. The government also plans to auction additional electricity to promote competitiveness and reduce reliance on state-run power businesses. Independent boards have been appointed across most distribution companies, enhancing recovery rates and minimizing line losses.

The Federal Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy, especially solar power, while ensuring reforms are implemented transparently to attract substantial investment in the power sector.

Ambassador Galey expressed France’s willingness to provide technical and financial assistance for Pakistan’s EV initiatives and energy reforms. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration to foster sustainable and environmentally friendly developments in Pakistan’s power sector.

The meeting underscored Pakistan’s progress in renewable energy and green initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the energy landscape.
