ISLAMABAD: The Engineering Development Board (EDB) has been entrusted by the Ministry of Energy, under the National Electricity Policy 2021 and National Electricity Plan 2023, to design a comprehensive Power Sector Indigenisation Plan (PSIP).
This initiative seeks to promote import substitution, enhance localisation, and unlock export potential for Pakistan’s electrical power equipment. The PSIP will focus on localising the production of key power sector components, including transformers, switchgear, cables, insulators, energy meters, and overhead transmission fittings.
According to the EDB, the plan will serve as a strategic framework for reducing dependency on imports, boosting exports, and fortifying the engineering and industrial sectors.
To spearhead this initiative, the EDB has engaged the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) to develop a 10-year roadmap, based on comprehensive data from entities such as CPPA-G, PPMC, Discos, NTDC, Wapda, and K-Electric.
The plan prioritises assessing equipment needs, testing infrastructure, and local manufacturing capabilities. However, limited data availability has posed challenges.
In response, the EDB has launched stakeholder consultations via meetings and webinars, alongside a digital dashboard to streamline data acquisition and enhance demand-supply planning for the power sector.
This strategic move is expected to position Pakistan’s power sector for long-term growth and self-reliance.
