PPL Increases Gas Output at Shahdad X-1 Well in Sindh

KARACHI: Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has significantly boosted natural gas production at its Shahdad X-1 well in the Gambat South Block, Sanghar District, Sindh, following a successful water shut-off operation.

According to a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, gas production at the well has surged from 2.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to 8.4 mmscfd. Simultaneously, water production has dropped dramatically from 3,000 barrels per day (bpd) to just 26 bpd.

The Shahdad X-1 well, drilled in 2012 and operational since 2015, originally produced 26 mmscfd of gas but experienced a significant decline due to excessive water production, identified through a production logging tool (PLT) survey in August 2024.

PPL addressed the issue by partnering with a coiled tubing service provider to deploy acid-soluble cement technology, effectively isolating water-producing zones. This marks the first successful water shut-off operation in the Gambat South Block and the first use of acid-soluble cement technology within PPL’s operations.

The company, which holds a 65% working interest in the block, emphasized this achievement as a milestone showcasing its technical capabilities and dedication to maximizing output from mature fields. Government Holdings Private Limited and Asia Resources Oil Limited hold 25% and 10% working interests, respectively.

Earlier this month, PPL also commenced gas production from the Takri-1 exploration well in Sindh’s Jamshoro District, further strengthening its contribution to Pakistan’s energy sector.
