Sindh, China Strengthen Economic Ties with Focus on Infrastructure, Energy, and KCR

In a significant step towards economic cooperation, a high-level delegation from the Sindh government, led by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, met with top executives of Chinese companies in Beijing on February 5. The meetings focused on major infrastructure and energy projects, paving the way for enhanced bilateral partnerships.

The delegation included Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi.

Key Projects Discussed

  1. Revitalizing Karachi’s Transportation: Collaboration on the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project aims to modernize the city’s urban transport system. The project has been pending Chinese approval since 2016.
  2. Thar Coal’s Energy Potential: Partnerships were explored to develop Thar Coal resources and expand Pakistan’s energy capacity. The Chief Minister invited Chinese companies to invest in projects such as coal-to-gas, coal-to-diesel, and coal-to-urea.
  3. Sustainable Transportation: The introduction of electric buses and taxis was discussed to promote cleaner, more efficient public transport.
  4. Broader Infrastructure and Industrial Growth: Discussions encompassed wider investment opportunities in Sindh’s infrastructure and industrial sectors, including involvement from Chinese companies like Norinco, Beiben Trucks, and Jiangsu Trade Electro-Mechanical.

Chief Minister Shah expressed optimism about the potential of these collaborations, stating that they will enhance public services, stimulate economic activity, and create job opportunities. The visit signifies a strengthened commitment to the Pakistan-China economic partnership, positioning Sindh as a key player in Pakistan’s ongoing economic transformation.¹
