NEW DELHI: India has achieved a significant renewable energy milestone, surpassing 100 GW of installed solar capacity as of January 31, 2025. This achievement marks a crucial step toward the country’s ambitious goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy by 2030.

According to official data, India’s total solar capacity now stands at 100.33 GW, with an additional 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW under tendering. Hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy projects are also progressing rapidly, with a combined 64.67 GW under development, bringing the total capacity of solar and hybrid projects to 296.59 GW.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, lauded India’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “India’s energy journey over the past decade has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives such as solar parks, rooftop solar, and the PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana have revolutionized the sector. As a result, India has successfully reached the 100 GW milestone. Our commitment to green energy is making us self-reliant while setting an example for the world,” he said.

India’s solar capacity has witnessed an extraordinary 3,450% growth over the past decade, soaring from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. Solar energy now accounts for 47% of the country’s total renewable capacity. A record 24.5 GW of solar power was added in 2024—more than double the 2023 total—with utility-scale projects driving the expansion. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh emerged as key contributors to this rapid growth.

India has also made remarkable progress in solar manufacturing. From a modest 2 GW solar module production capacity in 2014, the country ramped up to 60 GW by the end of 2024. With sustained policy support, India is on track to achieve 100 GW of module production capacity by 2030, solidifying its position as a global leader in renewable energy.
